Rocks, Hills and Mountains

Post by Guest on October 18th 2015, 5:51 pm

Hello folks,
How do you make your rocks, hills and mountains: foam, papier mache (papier mâché in French) or anything else ?
Many thanks in advance for your help.

For my last dioramas used expanded polystyren blocs on which I glued old paper with PVAC glue thinned with water and with a little bit of washing-up liquid.

I have traditionally used cardboard cut into strips and then interlaced to form a fairly strong base. On top of this I usually put either strong paper or perhaps plaster impregnated gauze of the type sold by Woodland scenics.

More recently I have used foam carved to shape, often with papier mache to give it a final shape.

I've used both plaster cloth and the pink dense foam for mountains. In some ways I prefer to use both, the pink foam for the base and then the plastercloth over the top.

I've used plaster rock molds for rocks and also crumpled aluminium foam, although I found the foam somewhat unsatisfactory.
